IM on the mobile phone? No thanks…

May 14, 2008

There’s been a lot of speculation the last few weeks over IM replacing SMS text as the preferred method of communication on the handset. But I ask you… have you ever USED the IM feature on your phone? I use a BlackBerry, and even on a phone that sophisticated the IM service is terrible. The only time my IM feature works? When someone uses it to TEXT me!! Check out this article on the topic if you want to know more…

Except IM messaging is free and SMS/MMS costs ~$0.20/each or ~$20/month unlimited. In fact, its actually more expensive to send data via text message than the Hubble Space Telescope: http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/05/12/1419204

Poor execution doesn’t damn a plan (or technology). Given the right implementation, this should be seamless and invisible, the only noticeable changes being the elimination of SMS charges on my bill and the ability to send short messages to any of my friends on any mobile or IM network. In fact, Apple could do this with my iPhone, keeping the same UI & everything, and I would be none the wiser, but AT&T would never allow them to eliminate such a valuable revenue stream.
